About GovSifter
GovSifter was built by a federal employee with nearly 20 years in public service, frustrated by how hard it is for ordinary Americans to find the benefits they've already earned through their taxes.
When Benefits.gov shut down in 2024, it left millions of people without a clear, user-friendly guide to the programs available to them. GovSifter exists to fill that gap — with plain language, honest information, and no government red tape.
The system is confusing by design. Eligibility rules change. Programs have different names at the federal and state level. Applications are buried inside agency websites that were not built with ordinary people in mind. GovSifter's job is to cut through that.
We write about programs the way a federal employee would explain them to a family member — directly, without jargon, with honest acknowledgment of the limitations. When a program is known to have long waitlists nationally, we say so. When a benefit is being left unclaimed at scale, we tell you.
How We Fund This
GovSifter is an independent resource. We are not affiliated with any government agency. We earn a small commission if you use links to third-party services on our site — this never affects our editorial content or the programs we cover.
We only recommend services that are relevant to what people navigating the benefits system actually need: attorneys, tax software, financial tools, and healthcare platforms. We do not link to government program applications with affiliate codes. Government programs are free to apply for and we link to them directly.
