Veteran Property Tax Exemptions by State

Veteran property tax exemptions are among the most valuable relief available — and they scale with your VA disability rating. Many states grant a full (100%) property tax exemption to veterans rated 100% disabled or individually unemployable, and often extend it to surviving spouses. A partial exemption is common at lower ratings.

Compared below across 49 published states. Filing is free — apply through your local assessor or state tax office.

Never pay to file a property tax exemption

Applying for a homestead, senior, veteran, or disability exemption is always free through your county assessor or state tax office. You do not need a middleman, and no one can file it "faster" for a fee.

Be skeptical of official-looking letters offering to file your homestead exemption, "designate" your homestead, or send you a copy of your deed for $50–$200. These are private solicitations, not government notices. When in doubt, contact your county assessor or state tax office directly using the phone number on your tax bill.

Frequently asked questions

Do 100% disabled veterans pay property taxes?

In most states, a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability rating (or a total/individual-unemployability determination) pays little or no property tax on their primary residence. The exact benefit and whether it extends to a surviving spouse vary by state — see the comparison above.

Can a surviving spouse keep the veteran exemption?

Frequently yes. Many states let an un-remarried surviving spouse of a qualifying disabled veteran (or a service member killed in the line of duty) continue the exemption. Conditions differ by state, including whether the spouse must remain in the same home.

Does a partial VA rating qualify for any property tax break?

Often. Several states offer a graduated exemption that increases with your rating (for example, tiers at 10–29%, 30–49%, 50–69%, and 70%+), and some offer a flat veteran exemption regardless of rating. Check your state page for the schedule.

How do I prove my disability rating for the exemption?

States generally require documentation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs showing your service-connected disability rating, submitted with the exemption application to your local assessor. Filing is free.
